Voice of God

January 22, 2023| To Israel (God speaks through nature)

By Voice of God No Comments

This sermon series is entitled the Voice of God. In this study we’ll be examining different ways in which God speaks to His world. Before beginning this study, pause and listen for His voice to guide you as you move through this sacred space in His Word.

Read Genesis Psalm 19 incarnationally.

1. What does this text say about God’s character?

2. What does it tell you of the nature of God?

3. How do you see God’s love prevailing?

4. How does the text speak most personally to you?

Read Psalm 19.1-6 and answer the following questions:

5. In your own words define “the glory of God” (verse 1).

6. How do you embrace God’s glory in your ordinary everyday life?

7. What is God speaking to you through Creation?

Read Psalm 19.7-9 and answer the following questions:

8. In describing Scripture David uses words like, “perfect”, “trustworthy”, and “pure.” What words do you use to describe Scripture?

9. David says Scripture, “gives joy to the heart, light to the eyes.” What does Scripture give you?

10. In what ways are you living into Scripture?

Read and reflect on the comments of Eugene Peterson.

“Christians don’t simply learn or study or use Scripture; we assimilate it, take it into our lives in such a way that it gets metabolized into acts of love, cups of cold water, missions into all the world, healing and evangelism and justice in Jesus’ name, hands raised in adoration of the Father, feet washed in company with the Son.”

11. How are you assimilating Scripture?

12. In the last week how has Scripture been metabolized into acts of love?

13. In your own words describe Jesus’ relationship to Scripture?

14 How does His view of Scripture encourage you?

Read Psalm 19.10-11 and answer the following questions:

15. How highly do you value Scripture?

16. What is it’s worth to you?

17. How does your value of Scripture translate to you fully being led and loved by Scripture?

18. How does Scripture translate into you leading and loving others in the way Scripture calls for Jesus people to love others?

Read Psalm 19.12-13 and answer the following questions:

19. How does the Spirit speak to you?

20. How do you see grace at work in the Spirit’s voice speaking to your soul?

Read Psalm 19.14, allowing its truth to wash over you. Allow it to be both benediction, and an opening prayer to what’s before you.

Spend a few moments listening again for His voice. Allow your voice to proclaim praise for His goodness and grace. .

January 15, 2023| To Rebekah (re: Jacob & Esau)

By Voice of God No Comments

This new sermon series is entitled the Voice of God. In this study we’ll be examining different ways in which God speaks to His world. Before beginning this study, pause and listen for His voice to guide you as you move through this sacred space in His Word.

Read Genesis 25.19-26 incarnationally.

1. What does this text say about God’s character?

2. What does it tell you of the nature of God?

3. How do you see God’s love prevailing?

4. How does the text speak most personally to you?

Read and reflect on the words of Jesus at the conclusion of the Sermon on the Mount, and then answer the questions that follow:

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.  The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching,  because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

Matthew 7.24-29

Describe a time when you’ve heard God’s Word and put it into practice?

6. What was the outcome of that season?

7. How are you seeing God’s Word—the Bible as the Word to be kept, obeyed, and practiced?

8. If there’s one portion of His Word in which you consistently struggle to put into practice, what is it?

9. Why does this portion of His Word cause you to struggle?

Reflect on the words of Genesis 25 and then answer the questions that follow:

10. Describe the relationship between Isaac and Rebekah?

11. When was the last time you, “pleaded” for another? Who “pleads” for you?

After 20 years God says, “yes” to Isaac’s prayer.

12. What must that have been like for Isaac?

13.  Note a season when you consistently prayed for God to act and He acted just as you asked.

“If you’re waiting with God, waiting is okay. If you’re always waiting on God, you’ll be frustrated.”

14 How does this phrase resonate with you?

15. Rebekah prays, “Why is this happening to me?” What’s at the heart of her prayer?

16. What’s the difference between praying, “Why me?” Vs. “Why is this happening to me?

17. What truths in Scripture are your foundation when you are waiting?

18. How do you find encouragement in these truths?

19. When was the last time, like Martin Luther King, Jr. that you needed God to lift your head off the table?

20. How are you praying today?

21. What does your voice sound like?

22. How are you hearing God inviting you back to Himself?

23. How are you experiencing His rest?

Spend a few moments listening again for His voice. Allow your voice to proclaim praise for His goodness and grace.

By Voice of God No Comments

This new sermon series is entitled the Voice of God. In this study we’ll be examining different ways in which God speaks to His world. Before beginning this study, pause and listen for His voice to guide you as you move through this sacred space in His Word.

Read Genesis 1-3.

1. What does this text say about God’s character?

2. What does it tell you of the nature of God?

3. How do you see God’s love prevailing?

4. How does the text speak most personally to you?

Our friends at the Bible project say most people read the Bible in one of three ways:

The Bible as a Theology Dictionary – like we read the Bible to give us precise definitions about theological issues to help us shape our view of reality – what is true about the world.

The Bible as a sort of Moral Handbook – the Bible gives clear rules from God about how to live – the Bible tell us how to be in right relationship with God and others.

The Bible as a Devotional Grab Bag – the Bible exists to find personal inspiration so I can sort of pick and choose what I want to read or know.

5. How would you characterize the way you read the Bible?

6. Why does the way you read the Bible matter?

Read and reflect on the comments of Eugene Peterson.

Spiritual theology, using Scripture as text, does not present us with a moral code and tell us ‘Live up to this’; nor does it set out a system of doctrine and say, ‘Think like this and you will live well.’ The biblical way is to tell a story and in telling, invite: ‘Live into this—this is what it looks like to be human in this God-made and God-ruled world.’” Eugene Peterson, Eat This Book

Read Genesis 3.1-4 and answer the following questions:

8. How does the serpent tempt Adam and Eve?

9. What’s the core temptation?

10. How do you sense the evil one tempting you not to trust God, or causing you to doubt God’s trust of you?

Read Genesis 3.9-12, incarnationally, allowing God’s voice to speak to you, allow these questions to be asked of you, right now.

11. Where are you?

12. Who told you that you were naked?

13. What have you done?

14. In His love and mercy God removes Adam and Eve from the Garden. He protects them from eating from the Tree of Life. What are the implications of God’s actions?

15. Where do you see the redeeming love of God at work in chapter 3?

Read Revelation 22 and answer the following questions:

16. How does the ending of God’s Great Love Story give you hope?

17. What role does the tree of life play in God’s Great Love Story?

18. How are you moving toward the Tree of Life today? Where do you desire the healing salve of its leaves?

19. How are you currently experiencing the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ?

Spend a few moments listening again for His voice. Allow your voice to proclaim praise for His goodness and grace.
