10As the rain and the snow
come down from heaven,
and do not return to it
without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish,
so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,
11so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. (Isaiah 55:10–11)
Isaiah declares the provision of God as he expresses his absolute dependability. All that God does and says is reliable and true. For the people of Israel, rain and snow were considered gifts of God, gifts from heaven to earth. The Israelites believed that God was pouring out blessing upon them each time it rained. The water gave nourishment to the earth, bringing life to humanity.
God’s Word itself is reliable and true. His Word is sown into the world, and it will not return to Him empty. It will accomplish His purpose. We are invited to partner with Him in spreading His Word—His seeds—wherever we go. Our invitation is just to faithfully sow those seeds. God’s role is to bring the rain and the sunlight and to produce the crops. Our role is just to sow.
How will you sow today? In whom will you sow His truth, knowing that His Word will not return void?
